AGE vs. QUALITY

Rant-fest (on why I'm not going to read ONLY classics no matter what my parents say) follows. All caps. It's awful. You've been warned.

I FRACKING HATE THIS. MY PARENTS ARE FREAKING TWO-FACED. WHILE ENCOURAGING ME TO READ, THEY ALSO TELL ME I SHOULDN'T READ CONTEMPORARY NOVELS. AS IF CLASSICS ARE ANY BETTER. I LIKE TO THINK THAT THE HUMAN RACE HAS PROGRESSED, THANKS A LOT. TAKE, FOR INSTANCE, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. COMPARED TO MORE THAN 75% OF THE MODERN LITERATURE I HAVE READ OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS, IT SUCKED. AND YET, THEY WOULD RATHER ME READ THAT THAN AN EXCELLENT BOOK WRITTEN IN THE YEAR 2008.

IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY FRACKING SENSE. THEY AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME THAT ANYTHING AND THIS GOES FOR OBJECTS TOO THAT IS OLDER IS BETTER. BUT I HAVE A PACK OF PLAYING CARDS FROM THE 90S AND I HAVE ONE FROM THE 00S AND THOUGH THEY HAVE BEEN USED THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIMES, THE OLDER CARDS ARE ALL DISCOLORED AND WORN. YOU CAN'T SACRIFICE AGE FOR QUALITY, GOD DAMMIT.

AND HOW CAN THEY TELL ME TO READ ALL THE CLASSICS AND THINK I'LL NEVER HAVE TO PICK UP ANOTHER CONTEMPORARY BOOK? WHAT WILL I DO WHEN I'VE ALREADY READ ALL OF THE BOOKS FROM THE 1800S AND 1900S? WHAT IF I READ EVERY SINGLE FREAKING BOOK THAT THEY'VE BOTH READ IN THEIR LIVES? HOW SHOULD I PROGRESS? RE-READ THEM A MILLION TIMES? I DON'T THINK SO. I AM GOING TO READ WHATEVER FRACKING THING I WANT, AND I WON'T GIVE A CRAP WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS.

I'm sorry. I just went over that and I sound like a total b*tch. But I won't take back my words because they're true, and this was meant to be a place where I can speak my mind. I'm not going to bend to anyone else's will, and if people don't like that, then I guess they'll just have to stay away from me. Take me as I am or not at all. I'll do what I want and no one can change that.
